Our Goals
Our Approach
EK Structural Engineering is providing full technical design for major alterations across the existing property. Working in collaboration with the architect, our engineers are undertaking calculations and drawings to support the Building Regulations submission. The focus is to achieve the open plan architectural layouts with high ceilings and vaulted second floor rooms whilst being sympathetic to the Neo-Georgian form on the building’s exterior.
The Result
The structural package supports a complete transformation of the property. Open-plan living areas, new habitable rooms within vaulted spaces, improved connection between buildings and a re-modelled entrance façade all rely on sensitive but robust engineering. The result is a modern family layout delivered within a traditional architectural shell.
FAQs
A double-height rear extension introduces significant new loads, especially across long spans where open-plan layouts remove internal supporting walls.
This is achieved through introduction of structural steelwork within the roof space to allow the ceiling to be raised and maintained over a long span transferring loads to the front and rear walls
Although rebuilding an annex sounds straightforward, the connection back into the main house demands careful detailing. The new structure has to align visually, match floor levels and tie in structurally so that loads are transferred correctly. We also review foundations and lateral stability, which can often be critical in older properties which are altered structurally. A sensitive rebuild ensures the annex works both architecturally and structurally.
Vaulted ceilings remove ceiling joists and diagonal restraints that normally keep roof structures stable. To achieve an open vaulted space without compromising safety, the roof must be re-designed with alternative load-carrying elements such as hidden steelwork or structural ridge beams. Our role is to calculate the most efficient solution, maintain head height, and control deflection.
A cloister link creates a visually lightweight structure, but still needs to resist wind loads, roof loads and movement between the two buildings. We design long-span elements, calculate foundations and allow for differential settlement so the connection can move without cracking. The structure should feel refined and architectural while remaining robust enough for long-term use.
Architecturally ambitious homes often rely on open rooms, large glazing, vaulted spaces and clean lines, all of which reduce the number of traditional supporting walls. Structural engineering makes these features possible. By working closely with the architect from the outset, we align load paths, materials and details so the building is safe, compliant and durable, without compromising the character and symmetry that define the Neo-Georgian style.
